Trip ends, basketball continues

Am I becoming a basketball nerd?

I suppose the term “nerd” isn’t used much in the sports world. I must be turning into a basketball “junkie.” (But enough about semantics.) Why? Let me tell you about my day today, and how full of basketball it was.

Vince and I caught our 9:30 a.m. flight out of Eugene, finishing our trip reporting on the No. 21 WSU men’s basketball team beating the Oregon schools. After we landed in Spokane at noon (we had a connection through Seattle) and I got back home to Pullman at 1:30 p.m., I headed over to Beasley Coliseum to watch the WSU women’s basketball team play Oregon. (The Cougars fought back late, but lost.) Then I drove back home and watched five hours of men’s hoops on TV.
A replay of yesterday’s No. 11 Texas at Baylor game (83-77 Texas). Today’s No. 2 Duke at Wake Forest game (86-73 WF — a big upset). And the No. 6 UCLA at USC game (56-46 UCLA).

These are big games. Baylor played its ass off, nearly beating the nation’s eleventh-best team. (WSU beat Baylor in the non-conference schedule.) Wake Forest pulled off a huge upset and handed Duke its second loss this season. USC lost, which means that while UCLA solidified its place atop the Pac-10 with a 10-2 conference record, USC dropped to 6-6. And the Trojans are now tied for fourth place with Arizona and Arizona State. The Pac-10 is so deep this season the fourth through sixth teams are .500. This bodes well for WSU, which is 8-5 and third in the Pac-10.

This may be boring to you, but it’s my job. The better the Cougars do, the more I get to cover them. And this weekend all but guaranteed me a trip to the NCAA Tournament — wherever WSU gets sent.

So that was my life today — watching basketball. Yes, I’ve become a basketball nerd.
